Masonry Stabilization

College Hall
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA

The multi-phase project combined interior structural modifications with virtual reconstruction of the exterior facade of the 1871 landmark - Penn's oldest building. The original masonry facade utilized serpentine, a soft, locally-mined natural stone. The serpentine had reached the end of its useful life and was literally falling off the building. Working with masons and a cast-stone artisan, Keast & Hood Co. replaced the exterior with a durable precast concrete specially-formulated to match the serpentine in color, texture, and appearance. Additional work included design of shoring to facilitate the facade restoration, introduction of steel trusses to support the traditional timber framing, and stabilization of foundation settlement.
