Masonry Stabilization

Fisher Fine Arts Library
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA

A masterpiece designed by architect Frank Furness in the late 1880s, the Fisher Fine Arts Library was restored to Victorian splendor. Removal of an infilled floor permitted the restoration of the grand two-story Reading Room. Timber and iron roof trusses were reinforced and leaded glass skylights were restored. A portion of the original glass floor structure from the library stacks was saved and preserved as an historic artifact, while a new fireproof concrete flat plat structure was constructed within the building envelope to house library collections. The exterior masonry, comprised of brick, terra cotta, and rusticated sandstone, also was restored.
