Masonry Stabilization

Patapsco Female Institute
Ellicott City, MD

The remains of a former finishing school for girls were stabilized and transformed into the focal point of a new park where visitors can safely explore the ruins. After an extensive survey and condition assessment, temporary bracing systems were devised and implemented to restrain the two- and three-story unsupported walls. Masonry restoration included installing precast concrete lintels to replace decayed wood, rebuilding some areas, repointing exterior faces, strengthening and protecting walls with reinforced caps, and protecting interior wall faces with stucco to replicate original plaster. New permanent tubular steel frames were designed and erected within the walls to provide resistance against lateral forces. The project received an award from the MD Historical Trust for its creativity.
