Chilled Water Plant, Module 7
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA

Phase I of a multi-phase project added 20,000 tons of cooling capacity to the campus system, primarily for Huntsman Hall (also designed by Keast & Hood Co.). The single-story steel structure is 40' tall, and topped with eight cooling towers over a monolithic concrete basin capable of containing 390,000 gallons of water. This load is carried on a series of 10' deep, heavy structural steel trusses that span over 60' . The plant's full-height stainless steel surrounding screen is illuminated at night and has become a campus and regional landmark.
