Renovation, Addition, Adaptive Reuse

Benham Gateway Building
Bryn Mawr College
Bryn Mawr, PA

An 18,000 square foot addition was coupled with renovations to an 1880s Frank Furness-designed residential building to serve as the new entrance to the college. Wood-framed floors were upgraded to support office loading for the Admissions Department. Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL) members were introduced to strengthen floors, and existing cut-off rafter ends were spliced with steel channels to support the PSL members. The three-story, steel-framed addition includes pre-manufactured wood trusses. A wrap-around timber-framed porch blends the old with the new for a seamless appearance.
