Renovation, Addition, Adaptive Reuse

Schlesinger Library
Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University
Cambridge, MA

In addition to collections on the history of women in America, the library houses the archives of Radcliffe College, consolidated into Harvard in 1999. Renovations to the early 20th Century library included removal of modifications made during the 1960s and 1980s. A partial-story third floor was removed, restoring a portion of the original two-story reading room. Compensatory structure was added to upgrade the live load capacity of the original wood floors. Other structural work included ADA upgrades, exterior masonry stabilization, interior bearing wall support, and new steel framing.
