Hooper Island Lighthouse
Hooper Island, MD

First lit in 1902 and automated in 1961, the Hooper Island Lighthouse is the only cast-iron caisson-style lighthouse in Maryland with a watch room and lantern on its tower. The cast-iron structure supports a four-level masonry and iron-framed living space, capped by a watch level and a lantern level. Keast & Hood Co. performed structural engineering services related to a survey and condition assessment of the severely deteriorated historic lighthouse. Boroscope probes were used to minimize alterations to the original historic fabric. Recommendations were made for improvements to preserve and maintain the structure’s longevity.
