Special Structures
Structural design services were provided for a design-build rehabilitation of the historic lighthouse’s iron screwpile foundation and superstructure. Built in 1875 as a replacement for an on-shore tower light, Thomas Point is the oldest, unmoved, spider-type screwpile lighthouse in the US. Its foundation of nine wrought-iron screwpiles supports a one and a half story iron and timber-framed lighthouse. The design-build effort was necessitated by a prior condition assessment that identified corrosion and section loss on the structural members. Corrective measures include structural reinforcement of deteriorated elements and their connectors. Members were coated temporarily with epoxy polyamide to reduce further corrosion until funding is made available for installation of an advanced cathodic protection system.
