East Conservatory Roof
Longwood Gardens
Kennett Square, PA
Design of a new gabled greenhouse roof to replace the existing poorly-ventilated Lamella roof. In keeping with the 1970s-era steel basket-weave framework, the new East Conservatory Roof is comprised of stainless steel members and an exposed structure for hanging plants, lights, and decorations. The facility features an innovative root-heating system that uses steam lines beneath plant beds to warm the plants. It will drastically reduce building heating expenses during the winter, as the plants are kept warm enough to avoid ambient-heating the entire greenhouse.
