Keast & Hood Co. provided structural engineering for a 3,000 sf addition and renovation to transform Flynn Hall (ca. 1903) into a premier fine-arts venue. A series of 21-inch deep wide-flange steel beams spans the main theater and supports a new theatrical pipe grid, and steel catwalks serve a new black box theater. Beams were carefully located to allow historic timber roof trusses to remain unaltered. Wood floor joists were reinforced with engineered lumber, and composite beam construction and cold-formed metal roof trusses create column-free spaces in the addition. Precast stone veneers seamlessly match exterior cut-stone masonry. To connect the addition and new performance space in the original building, a 16-foot wide proscenium opening was cut in an existing 2-foot thick brick masonry wall.
