Merchants’ Exchange Building
Philadelphia, PA

William Strickland's landmark 1832 mercantile building was adapted for its new use as the centralized office facility for Independence National Historical Park. Heavy tile floor decks from an earlier renovation were demolished and replaced with new metal deck and lightweight concrete floors. Existing steel columns were reinforced with new composite concrete encasements. New minipile foundations were installed within the historic building to support new structural elements. New uses for the building include a central office space, library reading room, dense storage area for archival material, and a gymnasium.
