The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a federal agency that promotes US competitiveness and innovation. Its 578-acre Gaithersburg research and development campus includes 52 buildings and 3.4 million gsf of space. Keast & Hood Co. was awarded a small business Indefinite Delivery / Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to provide structural/civil engineering services for the Gaithersburg campus from 2009-2014. Work involves evaluation, renovation, modification, replacement, and upgrading existing building systems as well as new construction. The initial task order involves structural design for a Net Zero Energy Residential Test Facility - a residence similar in size and aesthetics to nearby homes designed to generate as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis.
