Keast & Hood Co. provided structural design for a one-story residential addition along the Chesapeake Bay. The outdoor living room serves as cooking, gathering, and entertaining space within the re-imagined form of a screened porch. The addition is situated at the southeast corner of the existing house and incorporates complementary wood and brick. Bracing for the screened exterior walls was limited by the use of fixed-base (“flag pole” design) steel tube columns. The tubes rest on heavy-grade beam foundations to resist wind forces. New built-up queen-post trusses were used in the new vestibule. The room’s focal-point fireplace features a firebox raised 18” above the floor on a structural concrete shelf.
