Van Amringe Building
Delaware City, DE
The Van Amringe Building, formerly the Sterling Hotel, was built in the 1830s beside the old Delaware Canal. Although the building is a registered historic structure and local landmark, it was unoccupied and in disrepair. Years of neglect and water intrusion caused extensive wood decay, risking a building collapse. Delaware City secured funding from the DE Dept. of Transportation for stabilization of the 11,500 square foot building. The small, but significant project bridges smart urban planning, historic preservation, and structural stabilization to strengthen the community. The stabilized building is awaiting redevelopment.
