What is a Structural Engineer?
Structural engineering is a specialty within civil engineering--the discipline that includes design of highways, airports, train yards, retaining walls, and tunnels. A structural engineer learns how to design all of these things and then specializes in buildings and frameworks. Many projects require a structural engineer to design components of both engineering disciplines; for example, a new building may need retaining walls or a small bridge so a driveway can span a creek.
To become a structural engineer, one must attend an accredited college or university, and then work under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer. Several stages of exams are required before professional licensure. The combination of hands-on training and exams is not unlike the process lawyers and doctors undergo.
Keast & Hood Co. structural engineers design new structures as well as repairs and renovations to existing and historic buildings. Our engineers are always learning about new materials and technologies, construction code requirements, and computer programs to better help analyze and design.
